Akersten Bay Camp Site

Good camp spot but very limited spaces. From the trailhead in Marahau it took us about 2.5hrs to reach camp, with full overnight packs. The camp has 3 spaces, however 2 of 3 are situated directly next to each other; Suiting a family or group camping together. The final camping spot is slightly isolated but within eyeshot of the others, about 20m away. There is a long drop toilet and a tap with water (that requires filter/boil to drink), great for washing sandy feet. There’s also a table and chairs, which felt luxurious 😅 The tent pads were rocky dirt and we mostly were fine with regular ground hog tent stakes, other than one spot which was particularly hard and claimed one of my pegs 🥲 now bent forever. The camp spots sit on the bush line right above the beach. The beach was at times populated by kayakers and day hikers passing by. At other times we had it all to ourselves. In February the water was cool but warm enough for us to enjoy a swim after arriving and then again in the morning before we headed off (although we did need to jump back into our sleeping bags to warm up after that!) Very chill spot, would consider 2 nights if you have the time and good weather! Watch out for the cheeky Wekas, they are thieves.

Beautiful beach and nice tent sites. There are only 3 tent sites and we had the smallest, the one closest to the toilet (the proximity of the toilet wasn’t a problem) which was only just big enough for our 2 person tent. Waking up so close to the beach was wonderful.

Amazing campsite. Enough space for 3 tents. Toilet on site. Safe beach. Good place to break your tramp for a rest.

We walked from Bark Bay to Akersten Bay and stayed there for one night in Februrary 2018. There are only three tents allowed which makes the place very calm and lovely. The toilet is medium but ok. Fresh water is provided (but you should boil or filter or treat it before drinking). The campsite can be reached on foot or by boat.
