Awaroa Lodge

The next season of white lotus needs to be here! I stayed one night at the Awaroa lodge, which is a gem to find in Abel Tasman national park, especially after a long day (or few days) of tramping. Rooms are quite spacious and clean. Restaurant closes at 7, which I was unable to get to in time as I had a late check in. Breakfast was great! 5 minute walk to Awaroa beach where the water taxis drop off if you are traveling by water. Otherwise, you can get there from the Abel Tasman coastal track. From the south, it will be the first track off the path - there will be a label. If coming from the north, be sure to time the low tide for Awaroa timing accordingly. You will pass the hut and then continue south for another hour or so. You will pass a track for “awaroa glamping”. Continue past this to the next one. It is quite a descent so be careful. When you get to the bottom, take a left and follow the bridge then take a right toward the property. Unfortunately for me, I had a 2 hour flight delay so I had to travel from totaranui through the crossing. Low tide was at 6:31pm, and though I got there right at low tide, it was getting dark. The last hour was an experience to say the least. Did not get there in time to have dinner :\ but fortunately, the restaurant servers were there to provide me with keys to my room, as the front desk / reception closes at 5 pm.

An absolute Dream Location! The sheer logistics of running a lodge in this remote part of our world is astounding. Spacious rooms tucked away in a lush bush setting, down to earth staff that treat customers like real people, beautiful food ...and then that barista-style coffee, the literal icing on the cake after hiking or kayaking in this hidden paradise :-)

We dropped in for breakfast while camping along the trail, so this is a review of their restaurant only! Excellent breakfast with friendly staff, and a much needed coffee when the camp stove doesn't quite cut it! We had the Big Breakfast option, which set us up well for the onward walk to Totaranui. They also have good access to the Awaroa crossing at low tide. There's a coastal route along the inlet, so you don't have to climb back up to the sky track after dropping down. They also packed us a couple of delicious blueberry, white choc and pisachio muffins for the road. Really reasonably priced and excellent quality.

We loved our stay here. If you’re looking for Instagram worthy five star luxe, this isn’t your place. But if you’re looking for a well located, well priced and well managed eco lodge in the Abel Tasman area then look no further. Head to the beach at sunset and you’ll enjoy the whole thing to yourselves. Magical!
