Guide does the right thing. I was in a bush hut on the upper Grey river on 5th feb 2026. the lodge Helicopter flew by me but then to my amazement came back and landed. The young lodge guide asked me how much water I wanted for the day. this is a rare thing in NZ, many is the story of Helicopters landing ahead of anglers already fishing with no consultation. This leads to anger and frustration for all parties when they catch up. So a big thank you to the young Owen river lodge guide with the reddish hair, sorry I didn’t get your name.

In the breathtaking South Island of New Zealand, this amazing fishing lodge is the kind of place that quietly redefines when luxury meets adventure! From the moment you arrive, you’re surrounded by dramatic landscapes, crystal-clear rivers winding through untouched wilderness, towering mountains, and a sense of remoteness that feels both peaceful and deeply special. The fishing here is nothing short of world-class. The guides are exceptional: knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely passionate about the rivers they call home. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or casting for the first time, they tailor each day to your skill level, ensuring unforgettable time on the water and memorable encounters with some truly magnificent fish. After a day of fishing, the lodge experience continues to impress. The two chefs, Joe and Dean, create consistently high-end restaurant quality food. It is beautifully presented, locally inspired, and each chef addresses the group to explain their creation before we eat. The perfect way to end the day with that incredible New Zealand wine and stories from the river. What truly elevates this lodge, however, are the hosts, Rebekah and David. Warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional, they create an atmosphere that feels both refined and deeply welcoming. Their attention to detail is impeccable, and their genuine care for their guests turns a luxury stay into something far more personal and memorable. This is more than a fishing lodge—it’s an experience of New Zealand at its absolute finest. A rare combination of stunning location, exceptional fishing, incredible food, and hosts who make you feel part of the family. A place you’ll think about long after you’ve left, and one you’ll undoubtedly want to return to.

High end luxury fishing lodge. David the GM greets you with enthusiasm and excitement the moment you arrive and walks you through the amenities which are many. Rooms very well appointed with 5 star service. Food was particularly inspiring with local lamb, seafood, venison, fresh baked breads and salads. Community style dining makes the lodge cozy and fly fishing equipment absolutely to notch and new. Who has Sage R8’s to rent? OWL, that’s who! Chris Williams and amazingly fishy and friendly guide with a lot of local knowledge to share on the river. The only suggestion is to pour larger cocktails instead of measured ones. Definitely world class!

We were well pampered, which is what I was after! The food and accommodation were absolutely fantastic. Felix and Kylie looked after us with first-class service, so smooth that it felt like we were part of the family. The chefs Ryan and Jo made amazing food; always a surprise and delicious beyond our dreams. The fishing guide Felix assigned to us (Adam) was extremely knowledgeable. Two days of fishing resulted in multiple brown trout to the net, including a personal best. Adam was able to provide new insights to John that upskilled his fishing ability. We live locally but would never have found the spots Adam took us to. We highly recommend the Owen River Lodge. We can't wait to go back there.

The lodge was as described providing excellent accommodation in spacious rooms which were well fitted and comfortable. The gardens and setting of the lodge was fantastic and we enjoyed the early summer flowers in the gardens which were well kept. Kylie and Felix are wonderful hosts who have a thoughtful but fun approach to hosting complimented by wonderful food and a great selection of local wines. It is the detail that sets the lodge apart and the personality of the hosts that we felt made the real difference. The fishing was excellent with so many different locations to consider so that almost all weather conditions were covered. We enjoyed a guide for 3 days who was thoughtful and caring and really made the whole experience memorable.
