H Hodgson & Co Ltd

H Hodgsons is a long standing historic general store along Fairfax Street in Murchison. Serving the community for since 1902. What you find today is the third shop built in the 1930s after the '29 earthquake. It is a Grade 2 Historic Heritage Site in New Zealand with an interior decorated in the manner of an early 20th-century general store. Opening times are 9am to 5pm (weekdays) and 9am to 4pm (weekends). Stopped by H Hodgens and very much enjoyed seeing the interior of the general store which now also serves as a tourist souvenir shop, NZ Post Office for the location community, also offering a few basic food and milk items for locals. It is a neat atmosphere and potential shopping opportunity if seeking to purchase something during your time in Murchison. We bought a pair of wool socks that work perfectly. Alas, also worth a few minutes to enjoy the early 20th-century architecture of the building facade which you can view conveniently while browsing around Fairfax Street.

What a lovely, proper old school family-run home dept store that you never see enough of these days. They had a decent range of clothes, tools, pharma and knick snacks...perfect for a traveler's needs. We just went in to have a look and ended up buying quite a few things. The owners were really nice and gave us a history lesson on the town and the store which you never really get when passing through these small towns. If you're passing through Murchison and have a few minutes to spare then I would recommend having a look inside. Yes you can get some of the things in 4 Square but I would far rather put my money into local businesses than a large conglomerate whenever I can.

A chance find as we wondered the street to stretch our legs - and what a gem of a store ! An authentic country general store, with helpful and friendly staff and an incredibly wide product range. We couldn’t help but purchase a few bits and pieces here, and think everyone passing through Murchison should call in and visit this piece of Kiwi retail history.
