Mapua Ferry operates a passenger and cycle ferry between Mapua Wharf and Rabbit Island, forming part of Tasman's Great Taste Trail. Owned and operated by Kiwi Journeys NZ, the crossing takes about ten minutes and is built to carry cyclists and foot passengers. The ferry also offers cruising options and can be hired for private functions and weddings, and is based at The Coolstores, 8 Aranui Rd, Mapua Wharf.
The skipper went above and beyond in our hour of need , was really appreciated ! Excellent service and very thoughtful. Thanks again

Seriously unattractive boat providing an excellent service connecting Rabbit Island with Mapua Wharf crossing the lovely Mapua estuary. It isn't all plain sailing, there can be a hell of a current and the wind pushes hard sometimes as it's a slab sided boat but the skippers handle it well. Room for lots of bikes and strollers as well as people. Note no dogs allowed on Rabbit Island.

Such a lovely trip back and forth to rabbit island. Also want to give a HUGE thanks to the ferry captain and the person on the phone at Kiwi Journeys, who mobilized to get us back early when our 8 year old broke his finger in a bike accident. Thank you!

I think you can pretty easily swim to Rabbit Island but the ferry will keep you dry. It leaves on the hour and as of November 2024, a round trip ticket was $11 USD per person. You can buy tickets on their website or on the ferry itself.

Such a lovely experience, Deanna the ferry driver is fantastic and we really appreciated her kindness and enthusiasm. It was a beautiful day for a ride and my 3 year old buddy was so excited. Well worth doing, especially with children. Such an easy way to get across to Rabbit Island from Mapua and worth it for the experience. Thanks Deanna for the wonderful service 🥰
