The Mussel Inn is a family-friendly cafe, bar and music venue in Onekaka, Golden Bay, built in 1992 by Jane and Andrew Dixon. The single-room building has a veranda on three sides and an open fire. It serves steamed mussels, mussel chowder, steak, fish and vegetarian mains, and brews its own beers, ciders and soft drinks on site. Live music runs most weekend nights.
On the way to visit the Archway islands, we stopped by to have a quick meal. Amazingly, they served the best steamed mussels we’ve ever sampled along with slices of champion sourdough. Services fantastic and atmosphere too. Definitely recommended!

We had high hopes as this was recommended to us but we were left wanting more and a little let down. My partner had the mussels - which had been recommended and they had just been boiled with no real flavour or additions which was a bit disappointing. My lunch which was the open sandwich was just a bit bland. We loved the vibe and decor but food was just a bit underwhelming.

We went for dinner, and then a concert. We had a spiced goat ragu, and a vegetable lasagna just delicious. Like a home-cooked meal. Then we watched the Barleyshakes, who were also excellent.

Mains were lovely. Goat had a nice kick to it and fish was moist and fresh. The apple and raspberry crumble tasted very heathy I’m glad there was some ice cream to crank up the sauger
