Nelson Lakes Motels is a family-run motel in the alpine village of St Arnaud, on Main Road beside State Highway 63. Owned and run by Yvonne and Richard, it offers self-contained studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom motel units plus family cottages, a short bush walk from Lake Rotoiti and bordering Nelson Lakes National Park. The adjoining Travers-Sabine Lodge sleeps up to 34 guests for group bookings.
We stayed for one night in a two-bedroom cabin and it was wonderful! Cozy, clean, quiet, fully equipped. And there's a lovely walk through native forest down to the lake.

Let's start with service, we got welcomed by very nice lady who knew a lot about area and help us formulate plan for evening activities. We were staying in room 10 well equipped and clean room, comfy bed, TV with 50 channels, kitchen even included electric pan, toaster, pots and pans. Bathroom clean and spacious. 10 out of 10.

My husband book ended our stay here because we had planned to do the Travers Sabine tramp (unfortunately due to a recurrence of my sciatica during the drive down from Auckland to Wellington, we pivoted to do rafting and cycling in Murchison). Our first night was in a one bedroom unit for $165 and on our return we had a 2 bedroom unit for $175, both very comfortable, clean and restful. We walked along the Black Valley track that runs behind the motel to Kerr Bay on Lake Rotoiti where you can swim off one of 2 jetties ( recommended to do if you stay here as the mountains in the backdrop of your swim is stunning). We both liked and were impressed with the proprietor, Yvonne who was friendly, thoughtful and kind. We will certainly stay again as I am hopeful to make another attempt to tramp the Travers Sabine, next time free of any medical impediments. Thank you Yvonne, hope to see you next year!
