Off The Beaten Trail offers self-contained cabins and ensuite studio flats in Murchison, a two-minute walk from the town centre and from the banks of the Buller and Matakitaki rivers. The property sits on the southern edge of Kahurangi National Park and provides bike storage and a workshop for guests exploring local walking, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking and jetboating options.
Lovely place to stop over on the way to the west coast. Well kept outdoor area to relax and have a BBQ. Kids had a ball on the rope swing! Very convenient with grocery store 50m up the road.

We only stayed one night but would have loved to stay longer. The accomodation was great - very clean and had everything we needed. The outdoor space and garden was stunning, like a little oasis. Plus there was a swing and trampoline for the kids.

We didn’t stay here but we did the Maruia Saddle cycle trip- it took us just under 4 hours and although my husband cycles a few times a week, I am not fit ( cycling to do the shopping!) so it is definitely achievable for most people. The mountain bikes that Arran, the owner operator, uses are great especially for the 6 stream crossings on the descent from the saddle and the gravel trail, and I definitely am not comfortable doing mountain biking! ( Very reassuring to know that Arran was an accomplished downhill MTB competitor as he certainly knows alot about bikes) The “ chalets” that you can rent to stay in are set in beautiful gardens that Arran also maintains. We will definitely consider staying here next time we visit Murchison, and there is a lot you can do for outdoor pursuits here.

Couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend a couple days in the Murchison area. Arran was a wonderful host and the care he puts into this property is evident in the beauty and thoughtful touches throughout.

6 stars! 11/10! Right, two reviews here really. 1) Accommodation - excellent. We stayed in 2 of the Units Arran has, both were very clean, big, light and warm. Kitchens have everything you need to self cater. The gardens are a great place to hang out. Location is excellent, literally in town and walking distance to all that you need. Arran is an excellent host, pointing out all the town and area has to offer including the perfect swimming hole in the river which was ideal on a hot day. He clearly takes pride in the service and accommodation he provides. 2) Mountain bike tours, transfers, parts and advice. Another 6 stars for this - I couldn't recommend Arran highly enough - he is a passionate and very experienced biker, so any aspect of bike provision, set up, maintenance and repair, riding advice, trails and experience, transfers... anything bike and region related, he's your man! He arranged accommodation, transfers to/from airport and trail heads/ends, white water rafting, and put us onto the right guys for helicopter charters. We managed the Old Ghost Road, a Paparoa/Pike 29 Track day ride, and some time in the Wairoa Gorge in the course of a week. This trip was a special occasion and Arran really played a big part in it's success. We'll be back.
