Paines Ford

We walked here at night to watch the glow-worms. It didn't disappoint but care to be taken with the river next to the track

This is an amazing little gem of a place. Paines Ford has two main swimming holes nestled among stunning rock features. The river currents can be a bit strong so only for competent swimmers. This area also has a bush walk and is popular for experienced rock climbers. Careful vehicle exiting onto the main road heading right to Takaka is required as there is a bit of a blind spot.

This is a beautiful spot. Hidden from the road by bush, just look out for the hard right turn into the car parking area. From there just follow the tracks with easy from the car park. Worth it just as a photo chance.

I completed the walk, which starts at Paine's Ford and ends at an exit gate on East Takaka Road. The track is flat and easy as it follows the river, crosses a wetland area on a wooden board walk, and then crosses farmland. Nice deep swimming spots along the way. Suitable for cyclists. You would need someone to meet you at the far end. Signs say "No Dogs". I really enjoyed this walk. I'm surprised it isn't signposted with more information.
