The Wholemeal Cafe is a cafe and restaurant on Commercial Street in central Tākaka, Golden Bay. Originally opened as The Wholemeal Trading Co in 1977, it was combined into a single café by owner Wayne Green from 1989 and is now run by managing director Aydee Green. The cafe sources its Arabica coffee directly from a small group of farmers, and serves breakfast, brunch and lunch daily from 7.30am to 3pm, with vegan and vegetarian options and outdoor seating.
After asking a friend who owns a coffee shop elsewhere " Where is good coffee in Takaka?" She 100% recommended this place after trying a few times since she was camping in the area. I bought a Iced Coffee and ordered Eggs Benne with Bacon. Absolutely will come here again. Staff were very nice, food was beautifully prepared and super tasty. Loved the coffee!!

We called in for coffee. It’s a cafe that personifies the alternative culture of Takaka. Staff were friendly. Great coffee, all coffee is ‘double shots’. Food looks great. We shared an almond/orange cake, which was delicious.

Always can be relied upon for consistent service, quality food and helpful staff. If you are visiting Takaka this is a great place to start. Amazing breakfasts. Lunch and everything in between. I am a local and when one of my sons from overseas is visiting, the Wholemeal is the only place he will go for food and coffee. He and his partner are exceptionally fussy about coffee so that says something. There are great murals and posters of movie stars from the 40's and 50's. This building was the original theater so has some great history. Always a nice vibe there.
