I went on the Beaches Bays Seals kayak trip in early May. Weather was perfect along with good sea conditions, and I was part of a small group with guide Patty who met us at Kaiteriteri to set up some gear and go over what to expect for the day. You have the option of getting booties and wet pants here, as the water taxi to Torrent Bay may involve wading through a bit of water especially in low tide (which it was). At Torrent Bay, Patty walked us through getting the kayaks ready and off we went! The kayak has tension straps to place your dry bag / water bottle and a rudder for steering by the person in the rear seat. After stopping at Medlands Beach for lunch, we were able to kayak into a couple of tidal estuaries due to favorable tides. Patty was amazing in explaining the wildlife and scenery, along with providing detailed instructions on navigating around. He also provided suggestions to my itinerary, as I had a free day. Definitely a must do in the area when weather is good and seas are calm!

We did the 3 day guided walk and LOVED it. Our total group had 18 people, 12 of which did the guided walk (the other 6, whom we saw for meals, did the kayak or self-guided walk). We were the only Americans in the group, which we loved as it was fun to talk to get to know travelers from Australia, NZ, and Europe. Our guides were very knowledgable and kind. All of the logistics of the trip were very well managed. The food was very good. The lodges were attractive and quite comfortable (but not super luxurious) with absolutely amazing beach front locations. We did 30 miles of walking across 3 days and had a lovely boat ride back at the end. The pace of walking was good for us (we are 4 fit outdoorsy people in our early 60s). I really don't have any complaints at all and I would like to do this walk again with my adult kids, although I'd probably try the kayak/walk combo next just for the variety. Do know that most of the walking is in the forest, not along the beaches, although each day you do spend time on the beaches and there are some great views. But it is mostly a forested hike. Also, our weather was absolutely fantastic, which had a big impact on our experience. I know weather cannot be predicted, but do schedule this trip when it is likely to be dry. We went the 3rd week of March.

Wilsons was able to secure us a private taxi as we arrived late and could not get a scheduled one. This was on Feb. 10, shortly after we began our month-long New Zealand vacation. I want to give a big shout out to our skipper, Jack, who taxied us from Kaiteriteri to Awaroa Lodge. Along the way he informed us about things we passed along the way, including the large flocks of Shearwaters passing in front of the boat. It was a glorious afternoon and it was high tide, so Jack cut the motor and pulled us into Sandfly Bay to admire its beauty. Stunned, I took out my phone to take a picture and immediately dropped it into the water. I was sure that I would be phoneless for the rest of the trip. But Jack told me to keep an eye on it while he turned the. boat around and anchored it. Then he took off a layer, dove in around 8 feet to the sea floor and retrieved it! Later we were able to nurse the phone back to a decent version of its former self. We could not be more impressed with and grateful for Jack's quick and selfless action, on top of his wonderful tour. Wilsons and Skipper Jack: 5 stars and a big thumbs up!

Did the kayaking to the split apple rock here, the instructor Krystal was brilliant, she provided clear instructions as well as interesting local information and stories. Highly recommend to anyone!
